Spirit-Filled Relationships: Marriage

Mike Butler

The world around us is constantly at odds with one another. Every situation we experience has the potential for blowing up. So many have yet to fully grasp the reality that every human being bears the image of God. Every human being was built to reflect His image and to treat each other based on that knowledge. Christians were called from the beginning to create a new community built on the foundation of Jesus Christ. His death, burial, and resurrection were to be our measuring stick for each and every relationship we have - especially within the community who call themselves Christians. Using Ephesians 5:22-33 as the text, Pastor Butler walks us through Paul’s thoughts on how marriage is a visible representation of that community. Join us Sunday mornings at 9:00 and 10:30 am for worship in our Main Sanctuary (9:00/10:30) and the South Building (10:30). Visit us at www.crosspointe.tv CrossPointe.

Spirit-Filled Relationships: Marriage (Ephesians 5:18-33)

Ephesians 5:18-33, NIV 2011 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.  21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

22 Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.   25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church—30 for we are members of his body.

31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” 32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Spirit-Filled relationships are covenant relationships.

The first covenant between God and human beings was marriage.

Genesis 2:15-25, NLT 15 The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it. 16 But the Lord God warned him, “You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden—17 except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die.”

18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” 19 So the Lord God formed from the ground all the wild animals and all the birds of the sky. He brought them to the man* to see what he would call them, and the man chose a name for each one. 20 He gave names to all the livestock, all the birds of the sky, and all the wild animals. But still there was no helper just right for him.

21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. While the man slept, the Lord God took out one of the man’s ribs* and closed up the opening. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib, and he brought her to the man.

23 “At last!” the man exclaimed. “This one is bone from my bone, and flesh from my flesh! She will be called ‘woman,’ because she was taken from ‘man.’ ” 24 This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one. 25 Now the man and his wife were both naked, but they felt no shame.

Mark 10:5-9, NIV 2011, 6 “But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’ 7 ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, 8 and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

Marriage follows the example of the Church.

Ephesians 5:18-21, NIV 2011 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery.

  1. Submit to Christ, then to each other.

Ephesians 5:22-30, NIV 2011 22 Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.

  1. Husbands and Wives submit to the LORD.

  2. Wives submit to their husbands.

Wives accept that their husbands were made husbands for a reason!

  1. Husbands Love their wives.

    1. As he loved the church

    2. Gave himself up

    3. Sanctified her

    4. “Cleansed” her

    5. Present her

Husbands do whatever it takes for their wives to grow into Christ as fully as they can!

Ephesians 5:31-33, NIV 2011  31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” 32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

5. Mutual love and respect for each other.
