Thankful: Promise

Mike Butler

Being thankful really calls for us to search our lives and ask, “Why am I thankful?” “What in my life have I been given that I can say was a gift to me?” “Who do I have that I trust and why?” Being thankful means that we are willing to ask, what promises in my life do I have? This week, Pastor Butler brings our study of Psalm 23 to a close by speaking to our ability to thank God for His promises. Join us Sunday mornings at 9:00 and 10:30 am for worship. Thankful: Promise

Psalm 23:1-6, NIV 2011, 1 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. 2He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, 3he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

We can be thankful because the LORD promises to guide us.

Psalm 23:3b-4, NIV He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Matthew 7:24-25, NIV 2011 24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

We can be thankful because the LORD promises our security.

Psalm 23:5, NIV 2011 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

Psalm 20:1-9, NLT 2013  1 In times of trouble, may the Lord answer your cry. May the name of the God of Jacob keep you safe from all harm. 2 May he send you help from his sanctuary and strengthen you from Jerusalem. 3 May he remember all your gifts and look favorably on your burnt offerings.

4 May he grant your heart’s desires and make all your plans succeed. 5 May we shout for joy when we hear of your victory and raise a victory banner in the name of our God. May the Lord answer all your prayers. 6 Now I know that the Lord rescues his anointed king. He will answer him from his holy heaven and rescue him by his great power. 7 Some nations boast of their chariots and horses, but we boast in the name of the Lord our God. 8 Those nations will fall down and collapse, but we will rise up and stand firm. 9 Give victory to our king, O Lord! Answer our cry for help.

We can be thankful because the LORD promises our passage.

Psalm 23:6, NIV 2011 6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
