Filled with the Spirit (Eph. 5:15-20)

Mike Butler

The follower of Christ is called to live differently in every way. We are called to give up the empty way we lived before Jesus and pursue the full life He died to give us. However, it cannot simply be a matter of making the decision to live differently. Nor is it something that a course correction will allow us to accomplish. Instead, we cannot live differently unless the Holy Spirit effects change in us. This week, Pastor Butler speaks to us about the full-life Christ has come to give us and how it can only be accomplished through the Holy Spirit. It is the Spirit’s filling, leading, and empowering that allows us to truly live differently. Join us Sunday mornings at 9:00 and 10:30 am for worship in our Main Sanctuary (9:00/10:30) and the South Building (10:30). Filled with the Spirit

Imitate the Father

Ephesians 5:1-2, NIV 2011 Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

Shine the Light of Christ

Ephesians 5:8-14, NIV 2011 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord.

Be Filled with the Spirit

Ephesians 5:15-21, NIV 2011 15 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.  21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Being filled with the Spirit ensures that our lives are not careless.

Ephesians 5:15-17, NIV 2011 15 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.

Being filled with the Spirit sets us free to live our lives.  (5:18-21)

Ephesians 5:18-21, NIV 2011  18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery.

Spirit filled lives are characterized by the way we:

  • Sing to each other and God
  • Celebrate God for everything.
  • Order ourselves to one another.
