Kingdom Come: The Heart of the Gospel

Mike Butler

Kingdom Come: The Heart of the Gospel. From the beginning, the linchpin of the church’s message has been Jesus’ resurrection. If the resurrection of Jesus - specifically the bodily resurrection of Jesus doesn’t occur, then there is no message of which to speak. The bodily resurrection of Jesus is the confirmation of his death as having fulfilled the Scriptures. The Resurrection points to Jesus’ words as true, his purposes and intents as true, and his sacrifice as true. Without the resurrection, no message of Jesus is really worth hearing. But the resurrection of Jesus has ongoing implications. Instead of the death of Jesus being the end of the story, the Resurrection suggests not only a new chapter, but really a new beginning. Join us Sunday morning at either 9:00 or 10:30. We have a number of opportunities for children, students, and adults. Apostle’s Creed  “I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost; born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.”

1 Corinthians 15:1-3, NIV 2011 Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.

Do not be confused - there is a specific Gospel that saves.

Do not be confused - no other Gospel saves.

Do not be confused - we can get it wrong.

1 Corinthians 15:3-8, NIV 20113 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve.  6 After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, 8 and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.

The Gospel is: the death of Jesus for our sins, his burial, and his total raising from the dead - according to the Scriptures.

Jesus promised his death, burial, and resurrection.

Matthew 28:1-10, NIV 2011 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.  2 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. 4 The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. 5 The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6 He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.” 8 So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”

Luke 24:44-49, NIV 2011 44 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” 45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

For the follower of  Christ, Resurrection means:

  1. Jesus lived, died, and rose again.

  2. A new kingdom has come and Jesus rules it.

  3. We are members of this new Kingdom through Jesus.

  4. We are to invite any and all to be a part of this new Kingdom.

  5. Eventually, Jesus will return and the new Kingdom will be the only kingdom.

Matthew 28:18-20, NIV 2011 “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
