The Struggle (Ephesians 6:10-20)

The Struggle (Ephesians 6:10-20)

Mike Butler

There is a battle going on every moment of our lives. We have a real enemy who seeks to destroy every shred of hope we have for today and forever. Many people don’t even realize the Struggle is even happening. Followers of Christ are called to accept that their daily lives are constantly under attack. They must admit that life is not simply about just smiling and hope it gets better, but to fight and fight hard. It is this struggle that every person faces, but the follower of Christ understands why. This week Pastor Butler speaks to us about “The Struggle” from Ephesians 6:10-20 and the only way we are truly able to win at it. Join us Sunday mornings at 9:00 and 10:30 am for worship. Ephesians 6:10-20, NIV 2011

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.

16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. 19 Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.

If we are to win the struggle, then we must admit there is actually a fight.

1 Timothy 6:12, NIV 2011 12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

If we are to win the struggle, then we must accept the reality of the devil and his schemes.

Revelation 12:7-12, NIV 2011 7 Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. 8 But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. 9 The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.

10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Messiah. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down. 11 They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.

12 Therefore rejoice, you heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has gone down to you! He is filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short.”

John 8:42-47, NIV 2011 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me. 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

If we are to win the struggle, then we must own that our enemy wants to destroy us.

If we are to win the struggle, then we must move forward by God’s method.

1 John 3:7-10, NIV 2011 7 Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. 8 The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. 9 No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. 10 This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.

Colossians 2:9-15, NIV 2011  9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10 and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority. 11 In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh s was put off when you were circumcised by Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.  13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14 having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

“Christians are stolen goods, plundered from Satan’s lair! For Christ came to die, not only to satisfy God for our sins and to provide an example of sacrificial love, but to bind Satan and deliver us from his condemnation under God’s law. For when he cancelled the written code of the law by fulfilling its terms on the cross, Christ “disarmed the powers and authorities” and made a “public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross” (Colossians 2:14-15)”

If we are to win the struggle, then we must wear the Gospel.
