Light (Ephesians 5:1-14)
We shine the love of Christ in our lives.
Ephesians 5:1-2, NIV 2011 Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
We shine the love of others in they way we live.
Ephesians 5:3-7, NIV 2011 3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. 5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a person is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. 7 Therefore do not be partners with them.
Richard Coekin, Ephesians For You “The fundamental solution to immorality, impurity and greed is nothing more complicated than thanksgiving, because sexual disobedience in Christians is generally caused to some degree by the spiritual amnesia of forgetting God’s grace and then feeling sorry for ourselves and entitled to indulge our sinful appetites.”
“All that God has created was originally created for good. Every aspect of “life” that humans experience originally had God’s blessing on it. Work, sleep, play, relationships, marriage, and sex. When Adam and Eve chose in the garden to ignore God’s commands and made themselves “god” by choosing, they set the stage for the ongoing wrestling match between submission to God and idolatry.”
Ephesians 5:8-14, NIV 2011 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. 14 This is why it is said: “Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
We don’t simply reflect light in our lives, we are light.
2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1, NET Bible 6:14 Do not become partners with those who do not believe, for what partnership is there between righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship does light have with darkness? 6:15 And what agreement does Christ have with Beliar? Or what does a believer share in common with an unbeliever? 6:16 And what mutual agreement does the temple of God have with idols? For we are the temple of the living God, just as God said, “I will live in them and will walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.” 6:17 Therefore “come out from their midst, and be separate,” says the Lord, “and touch no unclean thing, and I will welcome you,6:18 and I will be a father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters,” says the All-Powerful Lord. 7:1 Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that could defile the body and the spirit, and thus accomplish3 holiness out of reverence for God.
If we are to shine brightly, then we must be around others who shine already.
We shine in the darkness as much for ourselves as for others.
Galatians 5:19-26, NLT 19 When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, 21 envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God. 22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. 25 Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives. 26 Let us not become conceited, or provoke one another, or be jealous of one another.
